New Year's Eve 2011/2012 - What to do with another year and plenty of great beer

It's time to get this New Year's Eve thing started.

I know. It's not even Christmas. But too many of you have already begun to ask and more search engine results have been sent my way looking for what to do on New Year's Eve 2011/2012.

Some of you love this time of year; others hate it. One thing's for sure, there are plenty of you looking to find a great beer on New Year's Eve outside the comfy confines of your own home.

For those New Year's Eve naysayers, this one's not for you. This is for all of you looking for something to do on New Year's Eve, could be at 6 p.m. or 11 p.m. - looking for a party, looking for a good dinner, looking for a good beer with a bunch of your friends.

Here's a look at some of the country's establishments--particularly in and around Philadelphia--that serve up better beer throughout the year and their special New Year's Eve plans. If there's something missing that you know of, feel free to drop a comment at the end of this or a private e-mail to me here.

This list will continue to grow to almost 200 establishments up until December 30. The falling of the calendar this year ensures a long holiday weekend for most, so New Year's Eve should turn into an even bigger party this year. No matter what you do, eat and drink well, enjoy yourself, and be responsible out there.

This list will continue to grow to almost 200 establishments up until December 30. The falling of the calendar this year ensures a long holiday weekend for most, so New Year's Eve should turn into an even bigger party this year. No matter what you do, eat and drink well, enjoy yourself, and be responsible out there.

Beer Calendar: What To Do in January 2012

2012? Really? Anyone else feeling older? Well, let's get past that, celebrate the coming of the new and the passing of the old, and see what we have on tap in and around the Philadelphia region on the January 2012 beer calendar of events.

The calendar, as might be expected, looks a bit light by our standards around here. But, keep in mind that we're in a bit of a holiday hangover and I'll add to this calendar as new events are announced....as expected.

Party on my good people.

If I'm missing any that you feel should be on here, let me know.

$20 and under, down to and including FREE...Pay As You Go (PAYG) also included here

First up, around the Greater Philly area, expect to see Tom Kehoe and company gallivanting around the region every night from 12/31 through 1/11. They're calling it 12 Days of Olde Bartholomew Barleywine and it should be quite the spectacle as you've come to expect from the Yards Crew.

Weekly Brew Bits Update: 12/26/11

Lots of Christmas-y stuff going on this past week, so it's not difficult to imagine that you may have missed some of the following.

~ Dock Street proclaimed last Wednesday the beginning of "Occupy Dock Street". No plastic was accepted. Cash only. And for every Wednesday going forward.

They intend to pass along the saved merchant fees from the credit card companies to the customers, offering all food and drink discounted by 3%. Great concept, imo, albeit small. But, if more people and organizations made small statements like this, it might turn in to a bigger movement.

~ Bottling of beer for The Farmers' Cabinet on Walnut Street in Philadelphia may commence in the new year in Alexandria, Va. Yes, it's not easy keeping track of who's doing what (and where) with this throwback establishment, but it's certainly been an experience to follow along. Check out Greg Kitsock's notes over at The Washington Post for a bit more.

~ Marathon Grill, long a champion of well-sourced and well-made food, has closed a few of its 7-location family of reasonably-priced restaurants in Philadelphia [link to Foobooz]. In recent years, they embraced better beer, making for more delightful weekend brunches, and started a Brewerytown community produce garden to feed the neighborhood and to fresh-source their kitchen.

Not much inside scoop yet about the company's future. Here's hoping that at least a couple of spots remain open through 2012.

~ Guy Hagner, originally of One Guy/Berwick Brewing in Berwick, Pa., is taking his talents to Pittston and the forthcoming Susquehanna Brewing Co., which is slated for opening early in 2012.

See Jack Curtin's site for these recent details and Lew Bryson's for some additional thoughts (including Jaime Jurado's hiring) from last month. SBC's website is here ....and its Facebook page link over here. Should be an interesting story to follow.

~ Last, but certainly not last, some positive mainstream press for some local good guys. Media, Pa. was featured on this past week's Philly Foodies on NBC10 and, from a beer perspective, not too surprising to see two of the best rise to the top of the show.

Tim Volikas (the beer guy in charge of the two-year-old Pinocchio's Beer Garden) and David Anderson (Executive Chef at Iron Hill on State Street) were featured prominently in pieces on their respective establishments. Haven't yet been able to track down a link to the video, but when I do it will be here.

Media is a charming and diverse town always with something interesting going on and plenty of good eats and drinks.

It's been a hectic rush up to the holiday season. Did I miss anything else?

Call me Elf one more time....Happy Holidays.

You may now resume your holiday imbibing with the elves in peace.

Actually, I'd wondered recently how many even knew of the legal storm when it began brewing earlier this year. I'd mentioned a couple times in the past week or so to various people in the biz who basically shrugged and said something like "huh, dunno...kind of forgot all about that. Weird, though."

Collaboration? Not Litigation? Seems like a dreamy past.

So here we are. The Fegley's crew continues their thing in the Lehigh Valley with a successfully growing empire of locations, complete with coffee and burritos to round out the brewing and restaurant operations. Tröegs has its shiny new operation in Hershey as the envy of many in the industry.

Mad Elf. Rude Elf. I'm happy with them both. And comparing isn't really fair given that they're quite different beers.

There above is a picture of them living side-by-side at Wegmans when they both first made their annual reappearance back in October. I'd wondered at the time if the retail beer staff at Wegmans stuck them side-by-side with any intended message.

Tröegs is a bit more expensive. Given the recipe, you might imagine that. 33% more? Hard to say.

Here they are at home with me. I like 'em both. But, they're different. Rude Elf is more cinnamon and more allspice, but yet a quite drinkable "Christmas beer", particularly at 10.5% ABV.

Mad Elf is more honey and muted sweet cherries. Also, quite drinkable and, yet, 11% ABV. I prefer the latter but would not think of turning away the Rude Elf. Like I said, no reason to since they are so different.

While I'd like to be hopeful that these kind of legal actions do not become the norm, similar proceedings between other breweries in recent years suggest that may be wishful thinking.

Neither of the breweries are saying anything. Anything. I tried. I tried my "nice cop" approach and got nothing from either. It must have been part of the settlement, whatever that may have been. The extent of what I got was, and I quote, "We have nothing to add." (Tröegs) and "We are very happy that it has been resolved and have no further comment on that matter. We are proud that Rude Elf's Reserve always seems to prove a winner such as its 2002 World Beer Championship win and 2009 GABF win. This years batch is destined for greatness as well." (Fegley's)

Here's the official press release copy from Fegley's.

Fegley's Brew Works is pleased to report the litigation with fellow Pennsylvania Brewer, Tröegs Brewing, has been resolved and Fegley's Brew Works will continue to sell Rude Elf's Reserve. When asked to comment on this matter Jeff Fegley responded, "We have no further comment. You may direct any questions to me via email only at jeff@thebrewworks.com" When asked if Tröegs would be attending the Allentown Brew Works Beer Festival this Saturday, December 3rd, Fegley responded, "Unfortunately no, they are tied up with their new brewery expansion."

When asked about this year's batch of Rude Elf's Reserve, Fegley noted that it is "better than ever. We added two new 30bbl fermentation tanks this year and are really happy with how the complexity of the flavor profile has come together. The 1999 recipe has only been tweaked slightly over the years as the equipment changed, and was a Medal Winner at the Great American Beer Festival in 2009." Like many craft breweries, in 2011 Fegley's Brew Works has seen a giant increase in business. "We are at full capacity projected to brew about 3,800 barrels of beer in the next 12 months at our Allentown facility alone. We are adding 3 more 30 barrel fermenters in the next few months." said Fegley.

There are only limited quantities of this year's Rude Elf's Reserve left so get them while they last! Or sample them at the annual Allentown Beer Festival this Saturday afternoon with almost 30 other breweries attending. Look for Fegley's Brew Works products at Shangy's Beer Authority, Whole Foods, Wegmans and Tanczos, or sample their fine brews at locations like PJ Whelihans (Allentown and Bethlehem), Dunderbaks (Whitehall), Porter's Pub (Easton), TGIFriday's (Quakertown), Wise Guys Beer Depot (Allentown) and a distributor near you.

Happy Holidays from the rudest elf in Town. The now Legendary ...Fegley's Brew Works Rude Elf's Reserve. Cheers!

Craft Beer themes in 2011. It's a wrap.

As part of my way of tying a bow on the year 2011 in craft beer, I've got the first of three parts up over at The Washington Times in the Communities section.

Who doesn't love a Top 10 list that can be discussed and debated...and dissed?

So go and check it out and weigh in with your own thoughts of what were some of the biggest buzz topics in 2011. After this one, I'll have a Top 10 brewers list followed finally by, gulp, a Top 10 beer list.

Weekly Brew Bits Update: 12/19/11

Going into the new year, I need to do something about both getting more organized in the spirit of getting more information to all of you. Honestly, I'm not sure exactly where the future of "blogging" is, but with the likes of Facebook and Twitter looming larger than ever, it stands to reason that it's more difficult than ever for me to "keep up" with the rapid flow of information regarding breweries, beers, and events.

So as I attempt to take a step in the right direction, I'm planning to put up a weekly update each Monday morning of things that I (and you, perhaps) may have missed, or at least not drawn attention to, in the prior week. There'll be information, but not enough to warrant their own postings. I'll rely upon links to others that have more significantly reported on these things.

Is it the easy way out? Perhaps. But, the number of times I talk with many of you in "real life" and you express no idea about things that I'm aware of but just haven't written about tells me that I'm not doing a good enough job sharing these interesting tidbits of information with you.

Without further ado or agita, here's a handful of interesting things from the past week that you may find interesting as well. The focus will be, first, on the Philadelphia region and, then, beyond.

If you have suggestions for how I can make this the most effective delivery possible, by all means, feel free to let me know. Here goes.

~ Tired Hands Brewing Company owner, Jean Broillet, announced the details of his "Believer's Club". Membership details at the THBC website.

~ Forest & Main continues to gain steam towards its grand opening. Between its website and its Facebook page, you'll find (and see) all you need to know about one of Ambler's most exciting business projects.

~ Philly Food and Beer announced the First Annual "Grand Cru" Homebrew Competition in conjunction with Keystone Homebrew. It will be held on 1/5/12; deadline for entering beers is 12/28/11; all the important details at Philly Food and Beer.

~ Victory Brewing from Downingtown continues its phenomenal growth. It infiltrates South Philly with a reported spot inside the coming Xfinity Live! (planned opening: Spring 2012) with a German Beer Hall. Crossing Broad has a picture and some details from the press release.

~ Wheels of change in Pennsylvania vary their pace as promising signs went, once again, a bit dimmer. Check over at Lew Bryson's blog to learn more.

~ Apparently McKenzie Brew House is opening the doors on its third location in Devon, Pa. today. It's located along the northbound side of route 202 and has been the site of several restaurants, most recently Charlie Brown's, over the years. The Brew Lounge learned of this late last night via Twitter (thank heaven for Twitter, I mean how would I learn of these things otherwise?...it boggles) and has no further details at this point. UPDATE: The McKenzie Brew House homepage has a small blurb drawing attention to the 12/19 opening.

~ Jeff Bagby, head of brewery operations at Pizza Port, has announced his intentions to leave the 4-location southern California brewery after 6 years and strike out on his own. Bagby came up through the ranks with stops at Oggi's, White Labs, and various positions within Pizza Port and has won scores of awards along the way. San Diego Beer Blog has some details.

That's it for now. Anything else significant that I may have missed?
