Good Times and Great Beers at the Flying Pig in Malvern, PA
Seriously, these guys at the Flying Pig don't get as much publicity for their beer as they should. But, maybe it's better for the rest of us ;-)
Here's what was on tap last Thursday evening. The list is always remarkable; on this particular evening it was even better.
Victory Whirlwind Wit
Sea Dog Raspberry Wheat
Dogfish Head Chicory Stout
Three Floyds Gumballhead American Wheat
Brasserie Des Géants Gouyasse Tripel
Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shut-down Ale
Ramstein Blonde Wheat
Stone Arrogant Bastard
Oskar Blues Dale's Pale Ale
Russian River Pliny the Elder
Unfortunately, the Tripel Karmeliet (Brouwerij Bosteels) had already been kicked.

Damn... that's a great list! Which ones did you guys like the best?
I could've (well, wanted to) stay all night, but was only there for two. After my run in Valley Forge, I treated myself to the RR and FFF.
I was only moderately impressed by the Gumballhead. IMHO, it's more of an American IPA than a Wheat. The Pliny (which I've had before) is such a hoppy treat. Wish we'd see more of the Pliny the Younger, too.
Why don't I go here more often (only two miles from home) is a question I often ask myself!
I think you should give Gumballhead a second chance. It is subtle. It isn't the typically cloudy wheat. Don't hold that against it.
Malty, wheaty, barley malty all mix together to give you a very round, but, not overpowering drinkable seasonal brew.
Let everybody quibble over this beer not being wheat enough or not hoppy enough or not whatever. I would say, "Congrats to the brewer! You have created an interesting beer that takes the best of all three worlds :-)"
Long live Gumballhead!
In regards to Flying Pig... I too wish I could get out there more often. Great beer selection... bottled and on tap.
For those who don't like beer (who most likely are not reading the site) they have quite good drinks there too. They make an award winning drink called Pig Punch that's great.
The food is good too... I love their buffalo wings. All of the prices were pretty reasonible for food... and they have some interesting things... not just the typical bar food.
They have live music on the weekends. I remember several good jazz and jam bands playing there.
The crowd seems to start with a few late 20's... lot's of people in their 30's and 40's... and up.
My only gripe would be the fact that it is usually very smokey... it has low ceilings and most likely poor ventilation. Here's to hoping PA goes smokeless!
It's pretty funny having grown up in Malvern and knowing the Pig as a dive bar (and I mean nasty.) What a great turnaround it has made to now be such a great beer mecca.
Here's to good beer (and the best burger on the main line!)
